Documentary about e-numbers on BBC iPlayer

Unread post by frankiesoup » September 10th, 2010, 9:16 am

For those in the UK, there are some documentaries about e-numbers currently on BBC iPlayer.

The program is called E Numbers: an Edible Adventure and there are currently 3 episodes on there.

I dunno whether to take it all with a pinch of salt, but it's a pretty interesting look into what goes into our food.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0 ... e_Colours/ It's apparently available until 16th Sept.

Food writer Stefan Gates sets off on a three-part adventure to uncover the truth about those notorious food additives, E numbers. He wants to find out where these chemicals come from and what they actually do in our food.

But he is in for some big surprises... Expecting to uncover a world of synthetic chemicals that are best avoided, Stefan learns that many are actually completely natural and could even be beneficial to our health.

His journey begins with the E number colours. Stefan discovers why these chemicals don't just affect the look of our food but its taste as well. He learns what the colour in some of our cakes and sweets has to do with insects and flamingos and why some of the E number colours could have side-effects.

Stefan also delves into the world of flavourings and reveals why eating monosodium glutamate could be no worse for you than eating cheese or mushrooms. He also gains rare access to the magical world of the flavourings industry which can transform your food beyond recognition. His final test sees him using E numbers to get vegetable-hating kids to eat their first brussel sprouts in years.

G'day Frankiesoup. :wave (TH)

No worries sunshine, you are welcome. (TU)

Episode 3 was a tad difficult to find, but the others were pretty easy. (W)

Your concerns over its validity appear to be justified from the promo blurb, which states some crap about synthetic chemicals having a positive benefit. (RY)

I actually downloaded the BBC The Truth About Food and wouldn't recommend it. There are a few interesting points, but it is so obviously industry driven with some complete misinformation in it.

I've been using a book called "The survival guide to additives" for years now, so I know some e-numbers - for example e100 yellow colouring, or good ol' fashioned tumeric - are perfectly acceptable. I'm not convinced about a number of the others they look at - I like my food as untampered-with as possible. That said, form a purely sciency perspective, I really liked when they made preservative out of manure and urine.
